Um romance sobre as experiências luminosas e sobre tudo aquilo que não se pode narrar.No ano 2000, Mario Levrero recebeu uma bolsa da Fundação Guggenheim para terminar de escrever O romance luminoso. O livro tinha sido iniciado em 1984, na mesma época em que o autor, endividado, se mudou de Montevidéu para Buenos Aires à procura de trabalho. Com a bolsa, em vez de se dedicar ao romance, no entanto, Levrero se lançou à escrita febril de um diário da escrita do romance, diário este que se tornaria, ele mesmo, o seu magistral O romance luminoso. O livro narra em detalhes as confusões cotidianas de um homem de sessenta anos. Estão aqui todos os tiques de um narrador obsessivo tomado por fobias e superstições. Para o autor uruguaio, a possível transcendência só poderia surgir da repetição de manias que atribui à vida real sua condição de permanente adiamento.
